The Power of Morning Rituals

I have fallen in love (sweet love) with waking up early!

For over a month now I have been waking up before 7am and meditating. There is a blissful magic that happens before dawn when you listen to the birds chirping and see the sunlight peeking in the window. The Sikhs refer to this time of day as Amrit Vela which hightlights the exquisite beauty of the ambrosial hours before dawn as being the best time to meditate.

I feel happier waking up early. My mood is better and I have noticed that the energy of feeling productive makes me excited to get to work each day in the Älska Publishing office.

To illustrate the power of morning rituals, I’ll let you know what happened this morning.

5:30AM – Sean’s iPad alarm goes off playing Bon Jovi. I know this sounds weird, but the chorus of ‘Living on a Prayer’ wakes me up because I have to sing it loudly. Very loudly. Then I drink some water.

5:35AM – Meditate for 30 mins. We’re learning about rising above our limitations right now. It’s been so beautiful.

After 6AM – Coffee with vanilla soy and brown sugar while reading and hanging out with the kids and our fur babies. As you can see from the photo below, my daughter Olivia has a morning ritual of drawing and being creative. This is her meditation.

At 7AMish – I start cooking eggs for the family. I only just started eating them again so I’m really enjoying the process of trying to perfect the art of cooking good ones. Let’s just say that a few have ended up in the bin (or ‘trash can’ for US readers). Sean brought back an amazing pan from his mother’s house in Orange County, so it inspired me to learn how to use it. So far, so good.

After about 7:45AM onwards – we danced to Earth Wind & Fire while I made the kid’s school lunches, reminded them to get all of their school stuff packed, did Olivia’s hair in braids, got myself dressed and out the door by 8:55am to get them to school.

Rise and Shine

I love waking up early. Even better… I love setting the intention the night before (when I go to bed) that the next day is going to be amazing.

I think you may have just offered the perfect remedy to waking up early – Bon Jovi! I so understand the need to sing loudly while listening to ‘Living On A Prayer’. Love that song.

My morning ritual consists of a setting two alarms – one for the time I want to get out of bed and one 15 minutes earlier, so I can enjoy the feeling of just laying there for a little while. Then meditation and either reading a short inspirational piece, or watching a quick inspirational video to get my mind into a really positive place to start the day.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful morning rituals Kate. I love the idea of reading an inspirational piece. Please let me know how you go with the Bon Jovi alarm! It’s so much fun, and it’s hard not laugh when you sleepily sing along with the chorus. “Oooooo we’re half way there-eh…oh…ohh…livin’ on a prayer!” xo
