This post was inspired by one of my Twitter friends. She’s been going through a crappy time lately and asked if I could write a post about how to rise above the energy of a bad situation.
We’ve all been there. You know, when you lose a job, a loved one, a relationship, a bunch of money and life just seems to suck and you know you have a choice to either wallow in the misery or do something (anything) to make yourself happy and balanced again.
Here’s a list of 12 Things You Should Try to Be Happy when Shitty Shitty Bang Bang Hits the Fan.
1. Reframe failure as an illusion and a stepping-stone to where you really need to be
Most clouds (if not all) have a silver lining and with a little time you’ll see the bigger picture was at play to show you what you were really meant to be doing. Sometimes we stuff things up and make mistakes that feel like we’ve done the worst thing in the world. The truth? They’re really not that bad. It’s just a phase.
Tweetable Affirmation: See things as they are and don’t make them worse than they are.
2. Don’t compare yourself to others
Women do this with their bodies. They tend to look at photoshopped magazine images of cellulite-free thighs and then use it as an excuse to self-loathe. Don’t do it! Remember that everyone is different and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Physical, mental and spiritual beauty is very subjective.
Tweetable Affirmation: If you see your own beauty then that’s all that matters.
3. Take time for yourself
Part of loving yourself is loving your own company. You need to take time for yourself and be able to just be comfortable in your own space and skin. Take time to really know who you are and what makes you happy.
Tweetable Affirmation: I love my own company and accept all of me.
4. Let go of your expectations
Are you ‘shoulding’ all over people? Stop it. It’s nasty. Your version of the world is very different to everyone else’s. By placing shoulds on people, you are setting yourself up for anxiety and disappointment. Surrendering to the possibility of open and honest communication is much better than relying on the behaviour of someone else to make you happy.
*Although the title of this post includes the word ‘should’ – see it as an invitation to try out my concepts.
Tweetable Affirmation: My happiness is my responsibility!
5. Watch and read things that make you laugh
Laughter has magical healing properties to heal your soul. It uplifts you and transforms your vibration into a creative space for more happy stuff to occur. Make sure you watch a comedy or funny YouTube clips that will help to lift you out of your trench of gloom into indulging in a little chuckle.
Tweetable: This is the funniest video ever! Watch it now.
6. Drink more water and get more sunshine
Keeping hydrated can help to keep you calm and it’s good for your skin too! Also the sunshine has Vitamin D in there which helps your brain to release happy chemicals.
7. Exercise and eat your greens
Exercise also helps to release your happy chemicals and allows your hormones to work better as well. Lovely dark leafy greens like Kale, Spinach and Oak Leaf Lettuce will help your system clear out any toxins and clear space for happiness to flood your system.
8. Practice daily gratitude
I think it was Oprah that said that it’s impossible to feel sad when you’re feeling grateful. Even if you’re just grateful that from moment to moment you can draw a breath easily and effortlessly, then gratitude it a very powerful start to making yourself happy. And with anything, the more you look for things to LOVE and appreciate, the more you will find that the Universe puts things onto your path that will feel good, empowering and ideal for fueling your happiness.
Tweetable Affirmation: Get on the gratitude train! Toot, toot!
9. Meditate
Science proves that meditation is so good to reduce your stress levels. It also helps you to tap into your Divine potential. Sometimes your awareness of your own magnificence disappears when you feel like shit, but rest assured that if there was any way to ignite your sparkle, it’s by spending 5 or 10 minutes to reconnect with your Source or your Higher Self.
10. Give more and commit random acts of kindness
Help that little old lady cross the road or open the door for someone else when you’re going into the bank. The energy you create when you commit a random at of kindness makes your soul feel happy. Really tune into that feeling of being nice to people and being of service. If you do that for others, know that you are attracting all good things to yourself.
Tweetable: The fastest way to get out of an emotional rut is to give (give, give, give).
11. Become a prankster + dance like a crazy person
Your mission (should you choose to accept) is to download a fart app and then show someone how funny it isBUT YOU MUST KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE. By challenging yourself to do this, there is literally no way in the world you won’t be able to crack a smile. Try it and you have to let me know if it works.
Also make it a daily practice to crank up some really loud music and dance like a loony tune. Sean and I do this all the time and we laugh so hard sometimes. It’s a ritual to break the the seriousness when we need to decompress the most. People need to be able to laugh at themselves. It’s good for your heart.
12. Be honest with yourself
I’m just going to ask this… Are you in a relationship that doesn’t serve you? Are you constantly thinking that you want to leave? Life is short my friend, and there are always ways to take action to leave a dysfunctional situation. If it’s a crappy job you don’t like, a shitty marriage or a frustrating relationship with your mother then give yourself permission to FREE YOURSELF. Energetically detach and take steps to empower yourself. I can tell you from personal experience that nothing will make you happier if it’s a good time in your life to break free. Initially there will always be a sting, but the storm with pass and your heart will feel light once more.
